Australian GT will add a bespoke GT4 class to its Trophy Series from next year.
The Australian GT Trophy Series, which was originally designed to cater for older generation GT3 cars, will now offer a new category to competitors following a surge of GT4 cars heading to Australia.
The new GT4 class is open to any car that has a homologation and an SRO Balance of Performance rating.
GT4 cars are also eligible to compete in the Australian GT Championship sprint series and the Australian Endurance Championship in an invitational class next year, subject to the organisers’ discretion.
Tekno Autosports and Miedecke Stone Motorsport have already purchased new GT4 machines in recent months.
Tekno has ordered a McLaren 570S while Miedecke Stone Motorsport has taken delivery of an Aston Martin Vantage GT4.
“We expect that the number of GT4 cars will increase significantly over the next few years as the manufacturers offer very good race packages, including reasonably priced cars which have longer major service intervals and overall lower running costs,” said Australian GT manager Ken Collier.
“We already have GT4s from Aston Martin, McLaren, KTM, Porsche, Lotus and Ginetta either in Australia or known to be coming in.
“I have a tip that at least one of the recently announced Mustang GT4s will be ordered and there is talk about a couple of BMWs also being involved.
“When the GT4 competitor numbers are enough we will look to include them into the Championship races, in their own class.
“It is possible that this could be as early as 2017 for the Australian Endurance Championship and 2018 for the Australian GT Championship.”
The Australian GT Championship and Australian Endurance Championship will host its final rounds at Highlands Park, New Zealand from November 11-13.
